    For the first time Gandhi visited Madras in 1896. Second time, after 19 years, he visited Madras along with Kasturba Gandhi in 1915. He wanted to tour entire India to understand the mind of the people as suggested by Gohale.

    For the first time Gandhi visited Madras in 1896. Second time, after 19 years, he visited Madras along with Kasturba Gandhi in 1915. He wanted to tour entire India to understand the mind of the people as suggested by Gohale. He came to Madras, he met old friends and renewed his relationship with Tamils. Gandhi received big reception at the Central Station. The students, who came to receive Gandhi, relieved the horses from the Chariot and they themselves brought the chariot to G.A.Natesans House at Sunkurama Chetty Street in George Town. In memory of him The Hindu organised a meeting at their office premises. Sri V.S.Srinivasa Sastri presided over the function. Annie Besant also participated. Sri Rangasamy Iyengar, on behalf of the staff, welcomed the gathering. Gandhi unveiled the portrait of Kasturiranga Iyengar which was the artwork of the Artist Sri Nagappa.

Sri Muthuranga Mudaliar, the President of the Pradesh Congress Committee, received Gandhi and Vallabhai Patel and took them to the dais. Dr.M.A.Ansari presided over the Congress.

    The meeting at the Beach attracted huge crowd. Women in large number attended the meeting. It was difficult even for Gandhi to reach the stage. The place at the Marina Beach where Gandhi addressed was named after Tilak as Tilak Ghat.

    Gandhi came to Kanyakumari on 22nd night and stayed at Arunachala Pandaram Choultry. He came to the Sea Short on 23rd morning and tipped into the sacred place where the three seas merged at Kanyakumari.

He came to the Sea Short on 23rd morning and tipped into the sacred place where the three seas merged at Kanyakumari. He then started his Campaign against Untouchability throughout Tamilnadu. Dr.T.S.S.Rajan was responsible for Gandhis Harijan tour in Tamilnadu.

    Gandhis close associate and a trusted lieutenant for Anti Untouchability Movement, Sri Thakkar Bapa (Amritlal V.Thakkar) and Gandhi at the terrace of Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha at T.Nagar. During his last visit to Tamilnadu in 1946 he stayed at this premises. On 2nd Feb Gandhi laid the foundation stone for Thakkar Bapa Vidyalaya at Venkatanarayana Road and Andhra Mahila Sabha.

    Thousands of people gathered at the Central Railway Station to receive Gandhi. Among them Thiru Vi.Kalyanasundara Mudaliar, Dr.Varadharajulu Naidu, Sri Alladi Krishnaswami Iyer, Sri K.V.Rangasamy Iyengar were important people to receive Gandhi.

    Thousands of people gathered at the Central Railway Station to receive Gandhi. Among them Thiru Vi.Kalyanasundara Mudaliar, Dr.Varadharajulu Naidu, Sri Alladi Krishnaswami Iyer, Sri K.V.Rangasamy Iyengar were important people to receive Gandhi. Labour turnout was very impressive. Corporation of Madras decided to give welcome to Gandhi but the Commissioner of the Corporation acted otherwise. He banned the congress flags inside the premises. In spite of this ban, the Mayor of Madras Dr.Mohammed Usman and the Corporation of Madras gave a grand welcome to Gandhi.

    Coimbatore T.S.Avinashilingam Chettiar had an urge to do something for Education. He wanted to start his educational activity by starting a hostel for the students. Gandhi laid the foundation stone on 07.02.1934 for this Ramakrishna Boys Home.

    Coimbatore T.S.Avinashilingam Chettiar had an urge to do something for Education. He wanted to start his educational activity by starting a hostel for the students. Gandhi laid the foundation stone on 07.02.1934 for this Ramakrishna Boys Home. An Art Teacher of the school wanted his autograph in his picture which was teachers art work, Gandhi signed and wrote, I hope the students of the Vidyalaya will have strong faith in Truth and God.

    During his last visit, Gandhi stayed in Madras from January 21st to 1st of February, 1946. On 2nd and 3rd February, he visited Trichy, Madurai and Palani. The special train which carried Gandhi was converted into Gandhi Train and cut out of Gandhi was placed in front of the Engine.

    Gandhi was moved by the beauty of Uthagamandalam (Ooty). He mentioned the beauty of Ooty in the letter written to Sardar Vallabhai Patel. Gandhi was accompanied by Thakkar Bapa, G.Ramachandran, R.T.Keasavalu, daughter of Bajaj and a daughter and a mother from Hungery. The Hungerian women came to Gandhi to draw a portrait of Gandhi. This picture was taken when walking together in the beautiful valley.

    Gandhis health was deteriorated and doctor advised him to take rest for some time. He went to Mysore along with his wife Kasturba. After a month of rest he came to Chennai from Mysore to go to Sevagram.

After a month of rest he came to Chennai from Mysore to go to Sevagram. Gandhi came earlier than the time of departure. He was given a Chair and he sat in the platform. Rajaji came to the Basin Bridge station to see them off. Both Rajaji and Gandhi sat in the platform and discussed. Crowd around were fortunate to have a good dharsan of Gandhi.

While speaking to the students, he said, how clean your environment is the testing stone for your intellectual capability and training.
